Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Montessori Method?

A:  Dr. Maria Montessori recognized that the very young child goes through periods of great sensitivity in particular areas during which he or she learns more easily than at any time in life. Montessori education uses a personalized approach in which each child, respected as an individual, discovers the joy of learning within carefully prepared surroundings. Materials in the classroom are designed to give the child new experiences as well as develop specific concepts. Children learn to work in an atmosphere of respect for self, respect for others, and respect for the environment.

Q:  What's different about a Montessori classroom?

A:  An MCS classroom is a very busy place, yet it is also quieter than a traditional classroom. Because children choose their own activities, based on the lessons the directress has presented to them, they remain interested and engaged in what they are learning and doing. A Montessori certified teacher is always close by, observing and preparing to help with the next lesson or question. Children treat their materials with care and put them in their proper place once they have completed their work.

Q: Do you have a part-time program for Toddlers and Preschoolers?  I’m unsure about putting my young child in a 5-day program.

A:  All of our classes meet 5 days a week, with Toddlers and Preschoolers attending half days from 9:00 a.m. – Noon. Although many parents are skeptical about parting with their young children, they usually find that the children look forward to a consistent schedule that involves stimulating environments and friendly faces.  Of course, you are always free to take your Preschooler out of school for a "special day" any time you like.

Q:  Does my child have to be toliet trained?

A: Our Toddler Program accepts children starting at 22 months old; therefore, diapers are allowed in the program.  The teachers are supportive of children who are ready to start training.

Children are expected be toilet trained before entering the Preschool Program.

Q: Do you welcome families from other communities to attend your school?

A.  Absolutely! There are 31 towns and cities represented in our student body.  We have families from Homewood to Ogden Dunes and Dyer to Hegewisch.  We guess you could say, "It’s worth the drive!"

Q:  Do you offer foreign language?

A: Yes!  Kindergarten through middle school students meet once a week for Spanish instruction, which is taught through Language Stars.  To find out more, visit their website at www.languagestars.com.
